Reduce total direct C02 emissions by 5% by 2012 SRI Analysts / Shareholders / Legal & General Senior Managers / Third Sector / Government / Environmental NGOs Maintain Standards Group Environment Committee Elaine Maclean (Stephen Parker) Yes on Target We are on target due to reduced headcount (18% in offices since 2008) and reduced car based business mileage, offset slightly by significant increases in European and long haul air travel. Office energy use is down ~14% over the 2 years and business travel (which accounted for 16% of our reported emissions last year) should be down despite large increases in European and long haul flying (up 74% and 37% respectively over 2 years). Domestic air travel has reduced significantly by 41% over the two years, rail use is up 32% since 2008 which reflects on the 34% reduction in car mileage. On a per policy basis which has increased in the two years by + 8.6% we have been much more efficient at resource use year on year.
Reduce total waste production by 10% by 2012 Total Waste has reduced by 40% since 2008 across the Group. The focus for 2011 will be on the paper used to run the business as a waste stream.
Reduce paper usage by 10% from 2,249 tonnes by end of 2010 Yes Achieved This was a 2 year target. In 2010 we purchased 2,142 tonnes of paper. Compared to a baseline tonnage of 2,249 tonnes, this suggests a 5% reduction on 2008 levels. In 2009 we purchased 1,781 tonnes of paper. Compared to the baseline tonnage of 2,249 tonnes, this suggests a 20.6% reduction on 2008 levels. Between 2008 and 2010 we have reduced the tonnage of paper procured by 13% against an increase in customers policies (+ 8.6%) and the resulting increased communications brought about by the need to retain clients in a recession and our rebranding work.
